Bonsai are everywhere you look in Vietnam. Outside stores and banks. In restaurants and bars, even outside peoples homes.
You will also find them in the street in Cambodia, Malaysia and Thailand. Although some are a bit scruffy, others are clearly trained and maintained to a fairly high standard. The amazing thing is that even though they are valuable, collectable items they are left outside seemingly without fear that they will be stolen or vandalised. That I should be surprised at that, possibly says more about our society in the West than it does about theirs.
As a bonsai enthusiast for over 30 years, I am fascinated to see the trees used in this way and only wish it was possible to show off your prized specimens to the neighbours at home in England without them disappearing overnight (as they no doubt would).
